Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a powerful therapeutic approach often used in the treatment of complex trauma (C-PTSD), dissociation, and dissociative disorders. IFS is both a theory and a psychotherapy model, and many consider it a paradigm shift in how we understand the mind.

IFS proposes that each of us has an internal system made up of different parts. These parts can be understood as subpersonalities or inner figures that develop to help us navigate the world. Each part takes on specific roles in an effort to protect us and help us survive.

Most of us have experienced this internally — saying something like, “A part of me wants to move forward, but another part of me is holding back.” At times, we may notice ourselves shifting between different parts depending on the situation or emotional state.

Through Internal Family Systems, you learn to identify, listen to, and develop compassion for your parts. A core principle of IFS is that there are no bad parts. Every part has a protective intention, even if its strategies feel disruptive or extreme.

By understanding and working with your internal system in this way, you can gain clarity about your symptoms, patterns, and inner conflicts — and begin moving toward greater internal balance and self-leadership.
